History of Milan, Michigan

From early settlement and name changes to preserved Main Street architecture, Milan has a local history worth exploring.

Local history

From Tolansville to Milan

City planning documents note that Milan’s first post office opened in 1833 and that the community was known by earlier names including Tolansville, Woodward’s Mills and Farmers before the name Milan was designated in 1836. Wilson Park’s origins trace to land deeded for public use in the early twentieth century.

Today, the historic downtown remains one of the community’s strongest visual links to that past.
